What is Data Sampling / Logging? How is the Data Sampling Object used?
Tags: Data Trend Objects FAQ
Data Sampling / aka Data Logging is the act of logging data from a device. The logged data is often shown in a Trend display. Trending is the act of taking data and showing it visually, usually via a graph. The relationship between Data Sampling and Trending is intertwined.

A Data Sampling Object in EBPro is what is used to define and configure the process of sampling data from a device for later use such as in a trend graph. Data Sampling Objects can either be time-based (every x seconds) or trigger-based (sampling every time a bit transitions). Each Data Sampling Object can monitor 1000 consecutive addresses, and up to 64 different data points can be shown on the trend graph.

To get multiple items sampled, the data must reside in consecutive addresses (or elements of an array). Configure the read address with the first address (or element), then use the Data Format button to add entries for each data point to be sampled, defining the data format for each sample. Data Sampling can be configured for real-time (default) or historical. With historical, you can use a trend display object / history data display object to view data of prior days/weeks.

See the “Trending, Sampling, and Data Backups (Mastering EBPro)” Sample Project for more information.
